Keeping your Softub sanitized is a fairly simple process. All you need to do is add a little bit of chlorine granules 2 or 3 times a week, adjust your pH and alkalinity as needed and replace your filter frog every 4 months.
A filter mate, also known as filter frog is placed in a Softub filter. It will add minerals into the water for 4 months helping control the waters pH balance and giving a soft, clear and fresh feeling to your spa. Additionally, you will use 50% less chlorine when using it and will be able to keep your spa clearer with much less effort.
Can You Use Any Filter Mate With The Softub?
The filter mate that you will need for a Softub is unique in its size, especially the length of the device.
This means that you may find similar ones on the market that are called various things for other spa and hot tubs that will not fit or work with a Softub. It is best to look for a note on the box that says Custom Fit for Softubs.
What Size Of Filter Is Required?
You must have a filter that is at least 8 inches long for it to fit inside the filter. If you have a modern Softub and the filter designed for it, you probably have the appropriate size required. It will fit the majority of filters on the market.
However, if you are not completely sure, take a measuring tape to it and make sure there are 8 inches of room and you can have peace and mind when placing your order.
You also may find some Filter Mates that are much longer with notches. If you purchase this kind you can cut at each of the notches to shorten the cartridge. You may need to cut it all the way to the end to make it fit, then you should be able to use it with your Softub.
How Often Do You Need To Change The Filter Mate?
After 4 months.
The cartridge contains granules inside that slowly dissove into the water over a 4 month period making it very long lasting.
Before adding it into your Softub set the dial on the top of the frog so that it reads 4 months from the month you first place it in the water. This is a way to remind you in the future when it is due to be changed. A coin will easily turn the dial to the desired setting.
Check it at a later date and change it after it has been used 4 months. Sometimes you can find discounts on the filter frog, if you find a 3 pack special that would be full years worth you could stock up on and not have to worry about it for quite some time.
After Water Changes.
It is a good idea to go ahead and replace your old filter mate with a new one after routine water changes as well. If you have completed a cleaning of your Softub and removed it, replacing it is necessary for the best performance.
Should I Add Chlorine Or Bromine While Using The It?
This is not a replacement for chlorine or bromine and you will still need to add your sanitizing chemicals as you always have. You should however, be able to reduce the amount you are using by up to 50%.
If you are using your filter mate in a Softub, use chlorine granules – do not use bromine. Bromine is extremely strong and can damage the liner of your Softub. It also can void your warranty.
Add your chlorine or bromine for hot tub users based on the manufactures instructions, but you can slightly scale back how much you are using because of the benefits you will receive from the minerals being released from the cartridge.
You should find that you will go through a much lower amount while the frog is dispensing its mineral treatment into the water.
What Should You Keep Your Chlorine Levels At?
|Filter Mate Installed
|No Filter Mate
|1.0 – 2.0 PPM
The standard for safe swimming levels in a pool and spa are in a range from 1 to 5 ppm. The higher the number means the better it will sanitize your water. In the event your chlorine is in excess of 5 ppm, wait until the chlorine drops below 5 to re-enter.
In most cases if you do not have a filter mate, it is recommended that you keep your chlorine right around 3 ppm. When using the filter mate however, you are recommended to keep it right a 1 to 1.5 ppm.
That is half the chlorine that is needed to be added to give your spa the same clean comfort you and your family deserve when you are enjoying an evening of hydrotherapy.
How Many Gallons Of Water Does It Treat?
It will be perfect for any Softub owner no matter the size and model that you own. If you are using it for any other style of Hot Tub, it will treat any size up to 600 gallons of water.
